Back in 1887, an ingenious man named Charles Fey invented the Slot
Machine. These new gaming machines where manufactured - by hand -
and put into San Francisco area casinos. Not only was Charles Fey
the inventor of the slot machines his was the first one to sell and
distribute them.
Some people are under the assumption that these early machines were
large and cumbersome, however, that is not true at all. They were
pretty much the same size as todays slot machines. However, thats
basically where the similarities end. When the slot machine was
first introduced into the mainstream, they did not have all of the
varying symbols that frequent todays slot machines. Feys first
machine was called the Liberty Bell and the symbols included such
things as Bells, Horseshoes, Stars, and the images of playing cards.
He couldnt have known it at the time, but Charles Fey gave the
world of gambling what has become one of, if not the, biggest
sensations in gambling history. As a tribute to his genius, you can
travel to Reno and see that pioneering machine at the Liberty Belle
Saloon and Restaurant. It is most definitely a sight to see. This
original slot machine had the possibility to bring a win of up to
Twenty Coins for the correct winning combination of symbols, which,
especially in those times, was a good deal of money. Those who were
present when Fey revealed his invention had very high hopes for the
machines success, and rightly so.
A few years after the Slot Machines debut, in 1907 to be more
precise, Charles Fey made the decision to join forces with the Mills
Novelty Company. Together, they developed the next great slot, the
Mills Liberty Bell. Another couple of years down the line, in 1910,
the Mills Company introduced yet another first in the Slot
Machine industry. This new machine was called the Operator Bell, and
was the first slot machine to don the now famous Fruit Symbols.
From the very first slot machine that Fey introduced, the slot
machine had been made out of all cast iron. This made the slot
machines very heavy and difficult to move to the local casinos. To
solve this problem, in the year 1915, the very first wood cabinet
encased slot machine was invented. This innovation made it a whole
lot easier to deliver slot machines to the different local
businesses.
The next innovation came in the early 1930's when the Mills Company
decided to try and make the slot machines more appealing to their
target players. In order to do this, they first came out with a
series of encasement designs for the machines that each had a
specific theme. These new, colorful slot machines proved to be very
enticing to players, even more so than the company had foreseen. In
fact, during the 1930's, the everyday use of slot machines sky
rocketed throughout the entire country.
In the beginning, casino owners brought in the slot machines as a
form of entertainment for the wives and girlfriends of their
respective casinos High Rollers. Much to the surprise of these
casino owners, the money the casino made from the slot machines
quickly exceeded that of the money made from the casinos table
games. Fast forward to todays market, and we see that Slot Machines
account for more than Two Thirds of the ENTIRE income of land based
casinos in the United States alone! The initial success of these
brilliant machines continues to increase to this day. The average
casino in the United States estimate an amazing $300 MILLION each
and every year from their slot machines alone.
There are several denominations offered from todays slot machines,
from as little as a penny to as much as $100 or more. The most
popular machines, however, are the Nickel and Quarter Slot Machines.
These machines alone account for well over one half of the slots
action every
year!
A craze that began in the 1800's, invented by a mechanic, has now,
over 115 years later, become one of the fastest growing and most
popular sensations to ever grace the world of gambling. These
machines have come incredibly far in such a short time, and with
their increasing popularity, comes increasing innovations. Thousands
of people each year travel to their favorite casinos with the sole
intention of playing the latest and greatest slots available. That
many people CANT be wrong! To date, slot machines are the most
popular way to spend your time at any casino - land based or online!
