If you live in the United States and want to gamble online, you can’t use Mastercard to do so. The credit card company is now blocking payments from US customers to online gambling sites, which includes online casinos, poker rooms and sports books, among other things.

Previously Mastercard had attempted to block these transactions, but couldn’t find a way to do so. Operators of these gambling sites were able to come up with a code that would not be detected by Mastercard and marked as a banned transaction. The popular credit card company has now found a new method of coding that will allow it to block players from making deposits at these websites, however.

Currently Visa is still an option for US players who want to do some online gambling, but it is likely that the company will follow Mastercard’s lead. The last time Mastercard blocked online gambling sites, it only took 2 months for those websites to find a way around the system. It is an ever-evolving cat and mouse game.

The credit card companies are doing their best to avoid being associated with online gambling due to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was passed in 2006 but has yet to actually take effect. Of course, the UIGEA does not make online gambling illegal in the United States and there is no federal law on the books that does so, either. Currently only 4 states ban online gambling. However, UIGEA does allow the government to crack down on financial institutions that are used for “illegal” online gambling, even though there is no definition given for what types of online gambling are illegal. Mastercard, like many banks, is unwilling to take the chance of being punished by the feds and are playing it safe by banning all online gambling.

A while back, it was reported that SEGAGames signed a deal with Playtech to bring some of its popular brands to online casinos. This is news that excited geeks around the world living in their mothers’ basement (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
