Are 3-D slots the next big thing?

November 23rd, 2010

In January, Paddy Power is going to launch two revolutionary new online slots. What makes them so different is the fact that the slots are 3-D. Now I don’t mean 3-D as in “characters are shown in realistic-looking polygons, making them appear three-dimensional.” We’ve seen 3-D casino games like that. While they look better than the flat-looking graphics of old games, they are not truly three-dimensional. To be 3-D, the image has to have length, width and depth. On some games, that depth is faked through perception. These new online slots, however, will literally seem to pop out of the screen at you, like watching Avatar in the theater. Doing so requires that the player wear 3-D glasses, which Paddy Power will mail to any player upon request.

This is a gimmick, to be sure, but does it mean they will be good games? I have no idea. To me, the bigger question is: Are 3-D slots the next big thing for online casinos? Honestly, I hope not. I personally find all of this 3-D stuff annoying. There hasn’t been a single movie shot in 3-D yet that I want to see. Taking a lame movie and making stuff pop out at you doesn’t make me want to go to a theater.

Now companies are trying to sell 3-D televisions. I would find watching my normal shows in 3-D annoying (and that includes the special 3-D episode of Chuck, a show I just so happen to love). Not only is it annoying, though, but it could be hazardous to your health. A recent study performed by people a lot smarter than me (some science journal) said that long-term viewing of 3-D TV or movies would cause brain damage. To make the images 3-dimensional, the technology has to trick your brain. Long-term effects of messing with your brain isn’t good. It leads to headaches, blurred vision and potentially a loss of depth perception.

What does this mean for 3-D slots? Maybe nothing. I would advise that you don’t play those slots for long periods of time, certainly not for more than a couple hours at a time. I would also advise that you don’t play those slots every day. Of course, I’m not a scientist.

So is everything going to be 3-D soon? I like reading books, but are respected novelists going to start writing pop-up books? Sure, I can see Dan Brown doing that, but hopefully no one I like. Personally, I think that all of this 3-D stuff is a novelty that will soon be abandoned. Our culture has jumped on the 3-D thing a few times before and it never lasted very long. Besides, remember when they were talking about Smellavision? Now there’s something I definitely don’t want in an online slot. Keep your smells to yourselves, thank you.

Playtech releases new Christmas slot

November 12th, 2010

Playtech has released a new Christmas-themed online slot. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I guess it’s fine to release it that early, but I’m sure not going to play it yet. My neighbor already has his Christmas lights and other decorations up. It’s the second week of November! Can’t you at least wait until after Thanksgiving?

So Playtech has released a new online slot with a Christmas theme, called Santa’s Surprise. That’s fine and it’s better to be early with that than late, but I’m not playing it yet. So I can’t tell you whether I like it or not, but I can tell you what I have heard about it. Supposedly, this game is a 5-reel slot that has a 10,000 coin jackpot. The game features a soundtrack that features Christmas carols, Santa’s voice and more. If it has the smell of eggnog, pumpkin pie and cookies it would be even better!

The new slot has symbols you would expect with this theme, including Santa, a Christmas theme and presents. There is also an interactive bonus around, where the player is shown three wrapped presents and must pick one. Each present has a hidden bonus inside. Now there’s the kind of cleverness I like in a slot game. That bonus game recreates the excitement and suspense of opening presents on Christmas morning, not knowing what’s inside.

I can’t really tell you more about this game yet because I haven’t played it. After Thanksgiving I will and then I will give you a full review. Until then, I will try to finish eating my leftover Halloween candy.

Best Online Slots: Mad Dash

November 5th, 2010

Mad Dash is an online slot that brings me back to my childhood. If you’ve read my blog, you know how much I love games that do that. In this case, it reminds me of the old Looney Tunes cartoons with a tortoise racing a hare (usually played by Bugs Bunny). The tortoise would often cheat by using a jet pack or something. It also reminds me of video games like Mario Kart, where you see traditional characters that you love stuffed onto tiny race cars and battling it out. The Mad Dash slot has a little bit of both.

This is a game that pits a tortoise, hare, fox and other animals against each other in a race. Instead of running (which is really bad on the joints and way too exhausting), this is an auto race. The online slot features symbols of various cartoon animals on their race cars as well as other racing-related items.

Mad Dash is a 5-reel, 20-payline online slot that had a good number of bonuses. Players can win up to 25 free spins and all free-spin wins are multiplied by four. There is also a cool bonus game, where you compete in a race. You are shown three different racers, three different race cars and a choice of race venue. You then pick one selection for all three and get a certain number of bonus points depending on how well the animal you chose did on the car of choice on the course of choice.

In some ways this slot is actually better than the old cartoon and video game. It’s less frustrating than watching Bugs Bunny lose in a race he was comfortably leading and though it may not be as fun as playing Mario Kart, it comes with better rewards if you do win (um, that would be money).

The Mad Dash slot can be found at All Slots Casino.

New Robin Hood online slot

November 2nd, 2010

Robin Hood is one of those classic tales that is retold over and over and never seems to get old. It is reinterpreted many different ways, but I’ve loved almost every version. There’s the socialist version of the story, where Robin Hood steals money from the rich to give to the poor, people who need it more. There is the more traditional version, where Robin Hood is stealing money from the Sheriff that he had already stolen from the people so he can give them their own money back. Then there is the Russell Crowe version and I’m still not sure what happened there. I’m pretty sure the filmmakers got Robin Hood mixed up with someone else. Now Robin Hood is also the subject of a new online slot from Microgaming.

The title of the slot is Robin Hood: Feathers of Fortune and it can be found at All Slots Casino. Yes, that does say “feathers.” That is because all of the characters in the game are portrayed as birds. We’ve already seen animals portray the characters in the Disney movie (which had Robin Hood as a fox). Here they’re all birds, including Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Now that I think of it, we have already seen Robin Hood portrayed as a bird. Daffy Duck was once Robin Hood in an old Looney Tunes cartoon.

This online slot doesn’t have traditional paylines. Instead, there are 243 ways to win. The slot game has a number of bonus features, such as the free spins that are triggered by the Wanted poster. Players can also hit a multiplier bonus of up to 15 times the bet.

More information will come as I play the game some more, but after a quick initial sampling, I rather like it. Of course, as I stated earlier, I’m a sucker for all things Robin Hood.

Best Online Slots: Dioblo 13

October 28th, 2010

With Halloween around the corner, I have been playing a lot of horror-themed online slots lately. I like them, but some of them creep me out, like Scary Rich 2. I’m one of those people who slept with the lights on after seeing Paranormal Activity, so some of these scary themes are a bit much for me. I still like them, though. One game that does a pretty good job of creeping me out is Dioblo 13.

First of all, I have no clue why it is spelled “Dioblo.” I know that “Diablo” is the Spanish word for Devil. Maybe the makers of this game simply got the spelling wrong. In any case, this is another game with a horror theme. It features symbols of skulls, satanic books, creepy eyes staring at you from within a pentagram, a black cat, and a Devil-like creature with red eyes and horns.

Dioblo 13 is a 5-reel, 13-payline slot with a jackpot of 600 coins. As such, it is a small stakes game and not for the high rollers. Players can bet on the game in coin denominations ranging from $0.01 to $5 per payline. Having 13 paylines is kind of unusual, but it is probably on purpose. Thirteen is considered an unlucky number and some people even fear the number and think it’s evil. Some trivia: Fear of the number 13 is called Triskaidekaphobia.

There is a creepy ambiance to the game as you play, including horror music in the background and the animation of the symbols when used in a winning combination. The online slot does not have a multiplier symbol, which is disappointing. It does have two scatter symbols, a wizard and an elf. Either of the symbols can be used to unlock a free-spin bonus feature.

In the bonus feature, you get up to five free spins and in those spins, you can win more free spins and they come with a 1x multiplier. This game doesn’t have the best bonuses or payouts but if you’re in a Halloween mood, this is still a good game to get you into the spirit of things. Just don’t play it alone in the dark if you don’t want to have trouble sleeping.

Scary Rich 2 online slot

October 21st, 2010

What can I say about the new Scary Rich 2 game? Well, when I was a kid, this game probably would have given me nightmares. I guess it’s a good thing kids aren’t allowed on online casinos. Of course, I’m not sure if they even had online casinos then. Though unsuitable for kids, this creepy game is just the thing for those getting into the Halloween spirit.

When I say that Scary Rich 2 is creepy, I mean it. The background is some old stone building, surrounded by dead and dying plants. The borders of the game, including the lines separating each reel, are made of blood. The symbols are of different horror movie subjects. There is a werewolf, a somewhat-hot female vampire, a freaky male vampire, a creepy doll, a zombie, a scary clown and more. The soundtrack also helps set the mood, with sounds of rain, thunder and church bells. The creepy doll also dances to strange music.

The coffin is the wild symbol and it substitutes for any symbol except for the werewolf, which is the scatter symbol. During normal player, two or more coffin symbols in a winning combination triggers a multiplier of up to 13 times your bet. There werewolf symbol can be used to unlock a free spin bonus round, where you get 13 free spins and each win is tripled.

With Halloween coming up soon, this slot game is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for. If you want a game that still has a monsters theme but not as creepy, the original Scary Rich game is more your style. Either way, the game should be a ghoulishly good time and if you win some money on the game, you should be able to buy more candy. Or costumes. Those things are expensive!

The Scary Rich 2 slot game can be found at Sloto’ Cash Casino.

Halloween has the best online slots

October 19th, 2010

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year, mostly because I get to fill up on candy corn. Honestly, I have eaten at least three full bags in the last week. This could be a problem. The slutty costumes are another fun aspect of it, but for me (or at least for the purpose of this blog), it’s all about the online slots.

One of the great things about slots is that they can be given any theme. That means they can be tailored towards a special event, such as a holiday, such as Halloween. See where I’m going with this? Yes, I love slots with a Halloween theme.

There are a lot of slots that fit that bill. There is the Monsters in the Closet slot, which is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the time when I was scared of sleeping in the dark because I thought there were monsters in my closet and under the bed. This slot features a large number of creepy, scary monsters that I don’t want anywhere near my room!

Vampire Vixen is another fun Halloween slot. It has a hot vampire and vampires have always been one of the best monsters. There’s something sexy about how they turn you over to their side by biting your neck… On a similar note, there is also the Bitten slot, which is again about a vampire temptress.

Black Magic is a fun Halloween slot that doesn’t feature vampires at all. It is more concerned with witches and sorcery. That makes me think of those people who make you reach your hand into a weird pot to get your candy. It always made me nervous, but in a good way.

Halloween is a great holiday because of the candy, the freaky stuff and the fact that you can be whatever you want to be. Getting to escape from reality is healthy and important. I like to do that by playing online slots and there is no better way than by playing games with Halloween themes.

Best online slots: New Microgaming slots

October 15th, 2010

To me, whenever an online casino releases new online slots, it’s like my birthday. Or maybe Christmas morning. I have a brand new game to try and see if I like it. Even if the games aren’t great, the newness of the game gives it added enjoyment. If it’s a good new game then it quickly becomes a favorite. Four new online slots were recently released at All Slots Casino, so you can imagine how exciting this time is for me.

Tiger’s Eye is one of the new slots and it has an Indian theme. By that, I mean India. It is set in the jungle and features various wild animals commonly found in the Indian jungle, including monkeys, tigers, deer and more. If you know me, you know how much I love nature shows and animals, especially monkeys! So this game is right up my alley. The only bad thing about the game is that it makes me crave eating curry and I’ve never even had curry!

Dolphin Coast is another new slot, but I have already written about that new game. It is the other two games at All Slots Casino that are particularly exciting, because they relate to this time of the year. One of the games is Steinfest, which  is a game with an Oktoberfest theme. Beer is one of the few things I like more than monkeys and other cute and crazy wild animals. The Steinfest slot celebrates German culture with alcohol, food, lederhosen and everything else you’d expect from something with an Oktoberfest theme. It has everything you want plus the benefit of lacking the smell of sauerkraut. It’s the perfect game to play while drinking ale from a stein glass.

The other topical online slot new to the casino is Monsters in the Closet. This is the perfect game for Halloween and it features lots creepy monsters that would have freaked me out as a kid. I was always more concerned with the monsters underneath my bed than those in the closet, though. In any case, it’s a great game to play while eating candy corn.

All of these games and more can be found at All Slots Casino, so check them out if you want to try something new.

Dolphin Coast slot at Lucky Nugget Casino

October 12th, 2010

I think it’s fall now. I’m not sure. Where I live, we don’t have normal seasons. We just alternate between summer and fall, sometimes in the same week. One week ago it was cold but today it’s hot. Anyway, even if the summer is over, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sights, sounds and experiences of summer with an online slot.

Even though it’s not great weather right now, I can turn on the Travel Channel and watch someone touring a Caribbean island, living vicariously through someone with a much better job than me. If you don’t get the Travel Channel or they are wasting air space by showing one of those shows about food, you can get your fix by playing the new Dolphin Coast slot at Lucky Nugget Casino.

The Dolphin Coast slot has an underwater theme set somewhere in the tropics, where the water is crystal clear, the rum drinks are extra strong, and pirates occasionally kidnap you. It has a background showing the beautiful blue sea and symbols of dolphins, turtles, seahorses and various fish.

Dolphin Coast is a 5-reel slot that has 3,125 ways to win, rather than having traditional paylines. The online slot offers free spin bonuses of up to 25 free spins if the dolphin scatter symbol is triggered. Winnings are doubled during free spins. Players can also trigger a Pick a Dolphin bonus. Guess what you do in that bonus game…That’s right. You’re shown a pod of dolphins and must pick one of the dolphins. Each of those porpoises has a secret bonus multiplier associated with them, but you don’t know how much until you pick.

If dolphins, the beach, relaxation, vacation and rum are some of your favorite things, you will probably like the Dolphin Coast slot. It has all of that except for the rum, which you will have to supply on your own. It’s never a problem for me, since my house is always well-stocked with it. To play the Dolphin Coast slot, visit Lucky Nugget Casino.

Lady in Red Slot at Roxy Palace Casino

October 7th, 2010

One of my favorite things in life is going to a classy night club with some good drinks, good jazz music and a sexy singer onstage. Another one of my favorite things is playing online slots. Therefore, I can’t believe I had never played the Lady in Red slot before today! Having played it a few times now, I have to say that I rather like this online slot.

The Lady in Red slot is set in a classy jazz club. The character of the title is a jazz singer who performs onstage in a glamorous red dress… Wait, can I say “glamorous” when describing clothing without sounding gay?…Never mind.

Aside from the lady in red, the online slot also features symbols of a pianist, a camera, a glass of whisky with a man in a suit smoking in the background, and more. I do have one complaint about the game and it is a major complaint. There is no background music. This is a slot set in a jazz club, where the titular character is a singer, it has symbols of instruments, and yet there is no music. In fact, there really isn’t any audio in the game, with the exception of sounds alerting you when you win. I think a good soundtrack featuring someone sounding like Billie Holliday or Etta James would have been perfect and would have made this slot my favorite game.

That complaint aside, I still enjoyed the game. I listened to some good blues and jazz music on my iPod when playing to give the slot that ambience that it is lacking. As for the rest of the game, it is a 5-reel slot with 25 paylines. Players can bet from one cent to $0.50 per spin and the slot has a jackpot of $12,500.

There are a number of bonuses available in the game, including up to 25 free spins. During all free spins, the winning are tripled. The slot also has a multiplier bonus of up to ten times your bet. With the exception of the lack of music, this game is about as good as I can ask for.

To play the Lady in Red slot, visit Roxy Palace Casino.
