End of French Monopoly?
Perhaps setting the stage for the ultimate dissolution of Sweden’s online slots and casino monopoly in Svenska Spel, France is currently taking its own online gambling monopoly public. The European Union has required that all members participate in open trade amongst each other, and having any kind of internal monopoly is in direct contradiction with that. There have been rumors in France that there will be an opening up of the market next year, since the Commission has forced the country to revise their regulations on land and online casinos, and welcome outside companies to profit from French use.
The past ten years have seen a complete lack of outside activity in the online gambling sector. Fortunately for other countries, and also for any French gamblers who are thirsty for seomthing new, the French gambling company, La Fracaise des Jeux will be going public and others will have a chance to snap up all the parts. Plus, people are used to getting what they are used to, so they are happy that nothing will be changing so drastically that it will be beyond recognition.
Based on the success (or lack thereof) of France’s transition, Sweden may have to follow suit pretty soon. Either way, everybody will be able to use what is going on in France as a template for what can happen once Svenska Spel is opened up to the rest of the EU.
