Everyone Says They Win With Slots

Delaware and Maryland are in a war of sorts over slots and how they might grab the existing slots dollars that are out there. Delaware has been benefiting from them for years, but now Maryland is considering jumping into the slots race as well. If they do, Delaware says they have no problems adding to what they already offer, and are not concerned with Maryland’s entrance.

Maryland has not decided whether or not to add the slots yet, but Dover Downs says that they are adding 1.5 million sq. ft. and more slots whether they do or don’t. They say that with Maryland considering adding slots it simply pushes forward a time table that was already in place.

They know that if Maryland does decide to give the go ahead with slots that many of their current customers might think twice before making the drive to Delaware to spend their money – so they are going to make it more attractive and harder for them to resist. They say that no matter what happens, they are going to be more attractive than they have been, which will bring in the slots revenue on their own.

Maryland says that with the thought of them joining the race, if it causes Delaware to react in such a way then it must be worth the price of admission. They say that this is just more proof that it would be worth it for them to add slots as well. Opponents say that they are being “dragged” into a race that they don’t want to be a part of – but Maryland’s officials say that this is simply the beginning of a beautiful relationship between slots and the state.
