Prince
George Anti-Slots Political Scene
A November ballot referendum that would legalize slot
machines in Prince George, BC is being shot down heavily by a group of
county politicians who announced that they will work to convince local
residents to vote against it.
A group rally was led by State Attorney Glenn F. Ivey, who
was joined by a school board member, several local delegates, and two
state senators at an elementary school in Laurel, which is near the
Laurel track.
The Laurel track is on the border of Prince George and
Anne Arundel counties, and that spot could very well be eligible for slot
machines, if the referendum is green-lit by voters.
Ivey’s outlook is that gambling adversely affects those
who already have financial hardship.
Others argued that they thought the slots initiative would
create too little revenue for Prince George, given the low percentage of
residents projected to partake in the gambling.
Joined by one common goal, the group vowed to gain
supporters to defeat the slots referendum.
