Happy Meeting of Iowa Gaming Bigwigs

All too often, towns are apprehensive to allow and legalize slot machines, for fear that they will attract a lower class crowd, or that they will negatively influence neighborhood children, or simply disrupt the lifestyle that they are accustomed to. Supporters of casinos often argue that the presence of gambling brings in revenue to the town, allowing taxes to be kept lower, and enabling the improvement of public programs and facilities. It’s an ongoing and very common argument wherever gaming is concerned.

An exception to that situation was heard this month at the meeting of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. It was held at the Wild Rose Casino, and it was there that Mayor John Schad of Emmetsubrg announced that he was thrilled and grateful for the positive effects that the casino had had on their city. In addition, he mentioned that because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue that the casino had brought in, the town was on their way to being a “thriving, growing community”.

In response, the Commission was happy to express their gratitude as well, since they were given permission to operate in the town in the first place. They also added that it was the city’s welcome which has enabled them to contribute to charities and give back to the town.

This is a rare case in the casino world; it’s not every day where everybody is happy and content with the situation. It’s a case of a mutual understanding and respect. It’s also an excellent example of what happens when two parties come together with an open mind and gratitude for what each does for the other. The town of Emmetsburg is an example that should be heeded by all, towns, states, countries, and most of all, families.
