Something Fishy in Florida

As long as rules are in place, there will always be people to break them. That’s the basis of a story from Lake County, FL, where police just busted another business for illegal slot machine activity. In the United States, slot machines and gambling are allowed, as long as it’s through a state approved casino, who are required to apply for a permit to operate every single specific game. However, casinos who have not gone through the appropriate channels and are operating without a license are automatically violating the law.

A woman named Kerri Flowers owns the place called the Hide Away, which is located in the state of Florida. Authorities had been monitoring her activity for three months, and she had been given a warning, with an order to remove the slot machines from the premises within ten days. The police gave her several chances to stop, and gave her the benefit of the doubt with that warning, during which they explained the law, and how exactly she was in violation. Looks like Ms. Flowers either didn’t think the police would really come back, or maybe she didn’t think they would honestly arrest her, because even after the warning, she didn’t change her actions at all.

The most interesting part of this story is how slot machines were actually operated at the Hide Away. Apparently their goal was really to be hidden away because instead of actual slot machines, they only had computers, which ran the casino games. Furthermore, since the business would then pay the winnings in cash directly to the players, that is an additional offense. In the end, the Hide Away should learn this: If you are trying to hide, don’t tell people that you are hiding.
