Scarborough Doesn’t Follow Suit
The county of Scarborough has not followed suit with the various counties everywhere that have finally decided to approve slot machines. Perhaps it was the fault of the organizations that were trying to advocate for slots that weren’t able to raise sufficient funds to convince people that slots are a good idea. Perhaps it’s the organizations that are against slots that were able to raise enough funds to put out the advertising that convinced people that they are not a good idea.
Whatever the reason, Scarborough officially voted against slots in November, ending a long few months that looked up in the air for the machines. People that are for slot machines have always loved the possibility of the whole thing. The extra money from gambling is always put to good use for the community, whether it is into funding the educational system or into funding other public programs.
Still, those were not enough reasons to convince the people of Scarborough that legalizing slot machines is a good idea. Just like the huge issue that was major in California this past year, the family advocacy groups had their way, after pushing for several months their argument that said that slot machines, like gay marriage, would ultimately dissolve the strength of the family unit. Looks like that is actually the case that is going on in Scarborough since many also argue that slot machines unfairly take advantage of the uneducated and poor people that are desperate for a break in their luck. Studies have shown that people also who are depressed or down on their luck are more likely to become hooked or dependent on slots gambling than people who are happy and employed. This is a major reason perhaps that the citizens decided during these hard financial times, that the right thing to do was to vote against slot machines.
