Going Down Without a Fight
Various church groups are banding together to fight against the incoming
slots that Governor Deval Patrick is planning on bringing into play. They
are united in that they think that bringing in slots would be the biggest
mistake the state has ever made. They have waited months to move on the
issue as it has seemed that the Governor was not really interested in
legalizing the slots, but that all seems to have changed.
Now they have a long list of opponents against the slots because it
finally seems as though the governor is in fact looking to press the
issue of legalizing them. Not only are church leaders opposed to the
slots but they are joined by the League of Women Voters, various local
political groups and preservationists – all of whom are working to ensure
that the slots do not get legalized.
They are holding rallys, writing letters to their politicians,
demonstrating outside governmental buildings and plastering bumper
stickers on any car that will let them. They are saying that the rich
will only get richer if the state allows slots to come in, and the poor
cannot afford to get any poorer. They argue that people like Donald Trump
and Sheldon Adelson will clean up in their state and that they cannot
allow it to happen.
One very vocal slots opposition leader is the Reverend Jack Johnson who
is the director of the Council of Churches. He likens the fight to “David
and Goliath” and that they are going to fight tooth and nail to be the
winners in this gamble for the residents’ well being. He says they might
look like they are fighting a losing battle at this point, but that the
legalization of slots is far from being a “done deal.”
