Florida
Can Vote Soon on Slots
Due to early voting in the state of Florida, Miami-Dade County voters
will have a chance to vote on whether or not to allow slots to come in.
Florida has early voting laws that allow them to vote early in the
presidential caucuses, even before places like Iowa are able to.
Many residents and military personnel have started receiving their
absentee ballots already, and soon will start casting their votes for
their choice in the primaries, but residents of Miami-Dade have something
a little more local to think about.
Voters will be able to decide if they want to bring slots into Miami-Dade
County for the second time. The first time they voted not to allow them,
but since that time both Broward County has voted to allow slots and the
Seminoles have signed a compact with the state to be able to bring in
slots and table games.
Many think that it is in their best interest to allow the slots to come
in as their money is simply going to other establishments from those
people wishing to play the slots. Supporters of the slots are sending
mailers to all absentee voters urging them to vote yes for the slots. If
approved, it would allow slots at all of the pari-mutuels in Miami-Dade
County.
They say that by hitting the absentee voters before Election Day, they
can persuade many of them to vote for the bill. They say that many people
are either undecided about the slots or don’t really know what it is they
are agreeing to, so by sending out the mailer they hit a large portion of
that group with intent to change their minds or help them make them up.
They say that the county is losing millions in possible slots revenue to
both the tribe and Broward County, and that it just doesn’t make any
sense to keep them illegal in their county.
