Viejas Band Adding $800 Million Casino

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has announced their intention to bring in more slots with an $800 million expansion. The tribe is adding a casino-hotel resort just east of the slots casino that they currently own. The other location has slots, but it also has an outlet mall – while this new one will have a hotel in addition to the slots.

The new slots casino/resort will be south of San Diego and will have a 600 room hotel, a pool, shops, bars, restaurants, spa, conference center, movie theatre and of course, 2,500 slots. Their existing structure has 2,500 slots as well. The tribe says that these are preliminary plans and that things might change, but for now, this is what they are looking at.

The tribe’s general council has already approved the plan so they will be able to start construction in five years. This expansion will give them the distinction of being the only tribe in California to have side by side slots casinos, and the second to have two casinos. The Aqua Caliente took that distinction with casinos in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

The tribe is focusing on a “complete resort experience” instead of just a slots casino. The new slots casino and resort would be the most expensive in the state, and if it is done the right way experts say that it will make a lot of money for the tribe because of its location to highways and urban areas alike.
