Ocean City MD Fights Slots

The Maryland Association of Counties’ annual convention was last week, and it made for a perfect forum for the businesses of Ocean City to let the state and all of its counties know exactly how they feel about slots. Up and down the strip all that could be seen on marquees was their distaste for the slots.

Ocean City is not the only place where slots are not wanted, but as pretty much anybody who is in politics in the state was going to be there, they felt it was a good time to remind their elected officials about how they felt regarding the slots. They do not want slots in Ocean City, nor do they want them in Worcester County. The tourism industry in the city is unified in its decision not to have slots.

The convention came the day after Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Secretary Thomas Perez announced the results of the survey on slots to the governor. The report says that slots are a great way for them to resolve the budget problems that they are having, and it would assist the horse racing industry’s shortfall as well.

The report went on to say that with the number of residents of Maryland going across to West Virginia and Delaware to play the slots for really they are gambling already. It said that there was a demand for slots already in the state that was not being met. Therefore, if people are going to play the slots, they might as well do it within the state so that they can gain control over the slots revenue instead of it going somewhere else.
