Anti-Slots Group Still Working

An anti slots group has been working very hard to defeat a November statewide referendum on slots gambling that some are trying to pass. The group working on it is well known in political circles as they are the same group that stood behind former Montgomery County Executive Douglass Duncan.

Duncan had run on an anti-slots platform, but did not win his bid for office. Instead, Governor Martin O’Malley did, and many said it had to do with Duncan’s anti-slots statements. The group is called Marylanders United to Stop Slots. They are head by a familiar face – Scott Arceneaux – Duncan’s gubernatorial campaign manager.

He is joined by David Weaver, who was Duncan’s Communications Director. He is now Chief of Staff to Comptroller Peter Franchot. Franchot has been very clear about his disdain for slots, and knows that he can help the group meet this goal.

They have a ton of names that are standing with them that are also anti-slots. One of their bigger profile names is Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a Republican from Maryland. He has been a long time slots opponent and is behind the group 100%.

The event will be a fairly high profile event with the group talking about how they can defeat the slots referendum and making a plan for their future. They feel that they have truly mobilized and are ready to take on O’Malley.
